ZBA grants Hanover Mall height variance for apartment complex

The owners of the Hanover Mall are another step closer to bringing 297 apartments to Hanover at the back of the mall property where Patriot Cinemas currently sits.

The zoning board of appeals approved a height variance at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 11, which will allow PREP, the mall owners, to go beyond the 35 feet, three-story bylaw to create a 53-foot, four-story building. The vote was unanimous, 6-0.

PREP is working with The Hanover Company on the residential portion of the development, which will transform the indoor Hanover Mall into the outdoor Hanover Crossing over the next several years.

“It was a big hurdle for us to go over and now we have to go before the planning board,” said PREP Vice President Lloyd Sova. “If this didn’t pass, we would be going back to square one with what we could do with the site without residential. There weren’t a lot of desired options and weren’t a lot that would have lasted for decades. We would determine if it made sense for us to proceed.”
